Summarize YouTube Videos
with Claude

Some channels have exactly the information you need, delivered over forty minutes of throat-clearing. Connect TranscriptHook to Claude once, paste the link, and ask for the useful part. You never press play.

Claude reads text, not video

To summarize a YouTube video with Claude, give it the video's transcript. Claude cannot watch a video, so a pasted link on its own may get you a guess from the title instead of the real content. TranscriptHook is a connector that fetches the transcript behind any YouTube link, so Claude has the real words to work from.

You add it once, by approving it in your browser. After that, "summarize this" followed by a link just works, in Claude on the web, on your phone, and in Claude Desktop.

1. Connect it to Claude

Add to Claude

Log in to TranscriptHook, approve the connection, and you are done. If the form does not open pre-filled, go to Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector, name it TranscriptHook and paste https://transcripthook.com/mcp. Claude Desktop uses the same connectors as your claude.ai account. Using Claude Code, ChatGPT, VS Code or Cursor? The steps are on the MCP setup page.

You need a free TranscriptHook account first. Create one here; there is no card.

2. Paste a link and ask

Anything you would ask about a document works here, because to Claude it is a document. Summaries are the obvious one, but these are the ones people actually use:

  • "Summarize this in five bullets, then tell me if it is worth watching."
  • "What does the speaker actually recommend? Skip the intro and the sponsor reads."
  • "List every tool, book or number they mention."
  • "Does this video say anything about pricing? Quote the exact lines."
  • "Turn this into notes I can paste into Notion."

3. Optional: follow the channels instead of the videos

Tell Claude to start monitoring a channel: "Start monitoring @ChannelName." TranscriptHook then checks it about every 10 minutes and stores each new upload with its transcript. Later you ask "what did my channels post this week?" and Claude reads from that stored history. Asking about channels you already monitor costs no credits.

The useful-but-boring channels

If you subscribe to a channel for the information and tolerate the format, this is for you.

Lectures and long talks

Two-hour conference sessions and university lectures. Ask for the argument and the three takeaways, then watch only the section you want to see.

Earnings calls and analyst channels

Pull what management said about guidance, margins or headcount without sitting through the prepared remarks.

Tutorials and dev talks

Ask for the commands, the config and the gotchas, in order, without scrubbing back through the video to find them.

Product reviews and news

Find the verdict and the deal-breakers in a twenty-minute review, or check which of your channels covered a story at all.

The pattern is the same each time: subscribe once, then check in with a question. Newsletter research and earnings call transcripts go deeper on two of these.

What a transcript cannot give Claude

  • It needs captions. Creator-written or YouTube's automatic ones both work. A video with neither returns "unavailable" and costs no credit.
  • It cannot see the screen. Slides, charts, code on screen and demos are not in the transcript. A summary of a visual video will miss them.
  • Automatic captions mishear. Names, jargon and numbers are the usual casualties. Ask Claude to quote the passage before you rely on a figure.
  • It is not a watcher. Claude answers when you ask. It does not message you when a channel posts.

On cost: the free plan gives you 10 transcript lookups a month, and a lookup is only counted when a transcript comes back. That is enough to find out whether this changes how you use YouTube. The Starter plan is built for people who do it daily.

Free open-source servers exist. If you only ever paste one link at a time, a local transcript server does that job. The MCP page compares them honestly. This is the better fit when you want it on your phone, want to follow channels, or have been blocked by YouTube.

Common questions

Can Claude summarize a YouTube video from a link?
Claude reads text, so it needs the video's transcript rather than the video. Pasting a bare link does not reliably give it one. Connect a transcript tool such as TranscriptHook to Claude once, and it fetches the transcript behind any link you paste, then summarizes it.
Does it work on videos without captions?
Only when YouTube has captions for the video, either written by the creator or generated automatically. If there are none, you get a clear unavailable result and the lookup does not use up a credit. Most talks, lectures, interviews and tutorials have automatic captions.
What does it cost?
The free plan includes the connection, 1 monitored channel and 10 transcript lookups a month. Starter is $9 a month for 15 channels and 500 lookups. A lookup is used only when a transcript is returned. Questions about videos from channels you already monitor read from stored history and cost nothing.
Can Claude keep up with channels for me?
Yes. Add a channel and TranscriptHook checks it about every 10 minutes and stores each new video with its transcript. Ask Claude what your channels posted in the last day or week and it reads that stored history. Claude does not message you on its own, so you ask when you want the catch-up, or set it up as a scheduled task in an assistant that supports them.
Will the summary be accurate?
It is as good as the transcript and the model. Automatic captions can mishear names and numbers, and a transcript carries nothing that is only shown on screen, such as slides, charts or demos. For anything you will act on, ask Claude to quote the exact passage and check that part.
Does it work with ChatGPT or other assistants?
Yes. The connection is a standard MCP server, so Claude Code, Claude Desktop, claude.ai, ChatGPT, VS Code and Cursor can all use it. This guide uses Claude because that is where setup is quickest.
